Candle Care & FAQ
How do I properly care for my candle?
- Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Trim the wick to 1/4 inch prior to each burn. This can be as simple as pinching the top of the burnt wick off prior to lighting.
- Keep the candle on a flat, level and fire-resistant surface
- Keep the candle away from drafty spaces.
- Keep the candle away from children and pets. If this is a concern for you, please consider wax melts as an alternative!
Why is proper candle care so important?
While benefits of proper candle care include prolonging the life of the candle, it's also an important safety consideration.
When you keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch, it keeps the height of the flame at a safely controlled level and will prevent the candle from burning too hot.
By sticking to a maximum 4 hour burn time, you can also avoid overheating the jar your candle is in. This is mostly important in glass containers, as severely overheated glass jars can crack and burst. I have made this mistake before I started making my own candles- trust me, it's not fun!
I just burned my candle and now the dried wax looks mottled on top. What gives?
This is a common occurrence with soy wax and is purely aesthetic! It will not affect the safety of your candle in any way.
Why is there a brown/red tint around the edges of my candle?
Some of my candles may have a rust-colored tinge around the edges, or even slightly within the candle. This is purely aesthetic and the result of an ingredient called vanillin (yes, like vanilla!) in some fragrance oils. It has a tendency to cause some discoloration but has been proven to be a safe ingredient in candles.
There are additives that can be used to minimize this discoloration, but I choose not to use them to keep my candles as clean-burning and additive free as I possibly can.
